Lighter rules for reporting

Many companies find sustainability reporting complicated and expensive. The EU is now taking steps to help. The big news is a plan for revised ESRS to cut sustainability reporting costs by 30%, which would mean fewer data points for companies to collect.

This focus on simplification also helps smaller businesses in the supply chain. The EU clarified the CSRD value chain cap to protect SMEs from too many data requests from their larger customers. In a similar move, the EU is introducing Deforestation Regulation simplification measures to reduce compliance costs for companies dealing with products like coffee, cocoa, and wood.

Green tech: Money and rules

While some rules are getting simpler, the push for green technology continues. The EU is investing heavily in the future of clean energy, as seen with the recent announcement that it will award €1.09 billion to nine hydrogen projects to help speed up the energy transition.

At the same time, the EU is adjusting rules to be more practical for modern products. A new consultation is looking at new battery removability exemptions for items like smartwatches and electric toys. This shows an effort to balance circular economy goals with the real-world design needs of technology.
